For the Trees

I enjoy seeing trees for their beautiful abstract qualities. When I focus on the shapes between their twisting branches, they become drawings in the sky.

I began an exploratory project to express this thought in a series of paintings in the winter of 2020. The formal qualities were first captured in field sketches but ultimately painted from memory. By mid-summer of 2021 published a digital catalog showing what I had created. The range of works on paper, wood panel, and canvas comprised a variety of sizes and shapes, from 6" x 12" to 24"x 48." Using many techniques to create layers of depth, pattern, and color, I depicted an essential "treeness" in the series without a literal image of a specific tree.
