Good Nature
The entire kingdom of plants is an endless source of inspiration. I’ve met giant Redwoods on the Pacific Coast, primeval ferns in Latin America, and infinitesimal lichen in the Arctic North. They are all astonishingly sophisticated as they quietly nourish themselves with light and clean the air we breathe. The more I learn about these wonders, the more I marvel at our coexistence.
In my current work, I explored the intrinsic abstraction in the structure of trees, plants, and other flora. The interplay of lines, fanciful shapes, and random patterns expressed in branches and leaves inspired this collection of ten paintings titled Good Nature. Close study of this "plantasia" also encouraged using unconventional colors that exist in nature but are often hidden on the forest floor.
Working at the edge of abstraction requires a trusting dialogue with the painting, as neither of us knows the final destination. Several layers of paint, composed of spontaneous strokes and shapes, are applied and selectively removed in the process to arrive at an image that is visually alive in color and form.
